The Radisson Blu Gautrain towers over the downtown Sandton area and is directly across the road from the Sandton Gautrain Station. The 12 floors have incredible views of the surrounding area whether its over the commercial buildings surrounding the hotel or across the northern suburbs when relaxing around the pool.
Although primarily a business hotel, the situation is perfect for a relaxing weekend where everything is within reach around you. Whether walking or using the complimentary shuttle to attractions in the area or simply relaxing in your suite, the Radisson Blu Gautrain offers so many different yet exciting experiences. The business class passengers for BA have their own Slow Lounge available below the hotel and can be accessed from the hotel lobby or from the entrance directly off West Street.
With the location being in the centre of Sandton, there are a number of options available to local and international visitors alike. With a Whatsapp number available to message when you depart OR Tambo for Sandton, there is the complimentary option of meeting you at the station to assist with luggage and make sure there is safe passage across to the hotel. This is useful when arriving late in the evening or simply being of assistance to those who are used to looking a different way when crossing the busy street.
The Gautrain offers passengers from not only OR Tambo but conference delegates can use the bus routes that connect the Gautrain to ensure fast and easy access to the hotel.
MK Tours will transfer passengers to and from the hotel from any destination within driving distance and from the airport whether it be Lanseria or OR Tambo, Rand Airport or Grand Central.
Self Drive options are available as there is ample parking below the hotel.
The reception area is accessed through the drive through in the front of the hotel if one arrives by shuttle, on the 3rd floor through the lift in the lobby if arriving by Gautrain and through the garage if a self drive requiring parking.
The front desk staff greet you from their own desks and the personal touch once you have given your details, allows you to feel like you have just arrived at home. Once you have stayed at the Radisson Blu Gautrain, your details are recorded and there is no need to complete them on your next visit. Your suite entrance card together with a card containing the Whatsapp number for those moments when you aren’t near a phone at the hotel, are handed to the bellhop who will assist you and your luggage to your overnight accommodation.
If you have a parking card, this is taken care of during your stay and will be included in your bill. The MK Tours desk is alongside reception within easy reach and as they are in-house they are available on the Whatsapp number that is provided.
Technology is the key to the success of this hotel in many ways and through the arrival process you learn just how important it is to our daily commute.
Here is the interview with Werner Greer who spent time with me explaining why the Radisson Blu Hotel brand, especially this one, is such a success
The hotel design is built around train tracks as their theme and this is prevalent in the passageways to your suite. The incredible views of Sandton and the northern suburbs can be seen from each and every suite. Whether sun rise or sun set, the view remains breathtaking and shows the best side of Johannesburg.
The hotel suites are beautifully appointed with large and comfortable beds designed for a good nights sleep. The pillows are bigger than regular pillows and both soft and heavenly. The rooms are large and airy and include a desk for those that need to work during their stay (WIFI is free for hotel guests) and having a USB connection for phone charging is a great inclusion to the new and modern hotel room.
The bathrooms are well designed with the shower being alongside the bath and utilizing space efficiently. The shower space allows for one to move around easily and the large rain shower head means that you can enjoy a hot shower without worrying about the glass surrounds being too close.
There are no doors or glass walls to worry about if you are a largely built man or a small petite woman. The in-bathroom hairdryer is strong and placed alongside the mirror, where most hotels place them in a drawer far away from the mirror in the bathroom!
Bathroom amenities are provided and are enough for at least a three night stay. The towels that are provided are large and fluffy and this is something no many hotels cater for.
The choice of light or dark curtains allows you to decide if you want to sleep in, away from the strong Gauteng early morning sunshine or if you want to awaken early for that conference breakfast.
The TV options are limited but do include Sport and movie channels.
The Dining Experience
The Radisson Blu Gautrain offers in-room dining for both breakfast and 24 hour room service. The breakfast is served on a trolley with domed silver dishes and your choice of continental or full English.
The in-room dining service has a creative menu such as Movie Night Burger – A burger with cheese, Avo and a side order of Popcorn and Jelly babies. Although limited in selection, it has options that can suit any palate.
It can be ordered through Whatsapp or via the phone in the main room. Both options are available but do take time to deliver. Its not a quick meal option.
The Central One restaurant is located currently on the 12th floor but is being refurbished and will be accessed alongside reception with the great views of Sandton.
The menu is wide and interesting and allows for all tastes, local and international visitors alike. The most interesting part of the restaurant is that it uses a hydrophonic herb garden placed on the pool deck outside.
As part of our commitment to the environment they made a decision to grow their own fresh herbs for their restaurant. The only suitable option was to look into the Hydroponic vertical garden. Not only does it save money but it also saves time. No longer do they have to send out for herbs and we may not need them but also the kitchen doesn’t have herbs passing their usage date.
Guests enjoying the wonderful menu on offer at the Central One restaurant and Bar, can be assured that their herbs are freshly picked and served. From the garden to the plate takes on a new meaning! The Radisson assists wherever possible with local young talent especially from Capsicum.
The breakfast buffet is a delight of fresh fruit and wonderful condiments. From the oranges waiting to be squeezed alongside the squeezing unit, to the pastries that are soft and fluffy, the breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day and certainly at the Radisson Blu Gautrain, its also very visually appealing. The chef awaits your order for your eggs from poached to omelette and the accompanying meal options of sausages, potatoes and onions are as delicious as they are varied.
Central One Bar Awaits
The bar opposite the pool area has stunning views of the northern suburbs during the day and at night the brightly lit shelves create a nightclub ambience without the loud music! It has a great selection of cocktails together with sport on all the TV’s. We watched World Cup Soccer whilst relaxing in the large comfortable chairs.
Fully Equipped Gymnasium
There is a fully equipped Gymnasium with a fabulous view on the 10th floor. This centre has all the gym equipment you need to keep fit and healthy during your stay. It has refreshments to keep you hydrated and alongside the lift so its not difficult to find.
The Business Centre
Like any modern hotel there is always a requirement for a business centre. This particular business centre is fully equipped with technology for your computer requirements as well as conference facilities.
