My Journey

Captain oh my Captain

Hartbeespoort Dam, fondly known as Harties, has long been the hideaway and playground when visiting Gauteng. Whether an international or local visitor, it’s a great place to visit when the weather permits. In this area, we have great weather at least 9 months of the year. It is an arch type dam situated in the North West Province of South Africa.

It lies in a valley to the south of the Magaliesberg mountain range and north of the Witwatersberg mountain range, about 35 kilometres north west of Johannesburgand 20 kilometres west of Pretoria. The name of the dam means “gorge of the hartebeest” (a species of antelope) in Afrikaans. This “poort” in the Magaliesberg was a popular spot for hunters, where they cornered and shot the hartebeest.[2] The dam was originally designed irrigation, which is currently its primary use, as well as for domestic and industrial use.The daily cruise leaves at either 1 or 4pm with a round trip being approximately 2 hours. The flat bottomed boat has two levels, with the bottom being a bar and the top allowing for tables for seating. When the sun sets over the Magaliesburg Mountain range, the long shadows stretch over the still waters and its defines Sunset Cocktail!

The lunch time event enjoy a boat cruise and enjoy the dam and surrounding mountains from a whole new perspective. Enjoy a 2 hour cruise on a shaded boat with an onboard sound system. Drinks may also be purchased from the cash bar.

Group Packages include a 2 Hour Leisure cruise including buffet catering with a minimum of 15 passengers and a maximum of 35 passengers. Buffet catering included in price. Drinks excluded. Jet ski and tube rides are available during the cruise at R190.00 per person. (pre booking essential) Set Menu has Roast Beef, Roast chicken, Rice, Potato Salad, Greek Salad, Rolls, Chips and peanuts as snacks

Relax and enjoy the sounds of water passing underneath the boat, birds swooping over the dam and fish jumping from below while you sip your drinks and enjoy gourmet snacks served by the friendly and trained staff. From Captain to barmen they are all trained to ensure your safety on board.

Once the boat docks, it’s a short drive back to Sandton and less than 40 minutes.  It’s a great way to combine the Lion Park visit in the morning with a cruise in the afternoon.

Deon, of the D’olce Vita Guest house nearby, ensures the safety of his passengers with lifejacket training as well as ensuring that passengers do not get unruly and put their fellow passengers in any uncomfortable sitations.

The town of Hartbeespoort is situated close to the dam wall and the villages of Kosmos, Melodie, Ifafi, Meerhof and The Coves, Pecanwood, Westlake and several other estates can be found alongside its shores. The town of Schoemansville was named after General Hendrik Schoeman, owner of the land during the 19th century.

As a worldwide traveller with an eye for something different, I started Travel Match. This initiative matches the Corporate Buyer or Event co-ordinator/Marketing Manager to not only share experiences with each other during an educational but also opens up a world of different ideas. Venues and activities now have a chance to meet buyers on a social level before getting down to business. I design educationals around fun and intuitive thinking and the Travel Match members love them.
